An Prediction Market Trader Profited $436K from Bets on the Ouster of Maduro.
A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.
Changing Odds in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the period preceding former President Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.
A handful of other traders also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Emerges
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A new rule introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
