Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
