Conservative reactions to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included little new information.
